Jazz Winds (Saxes, Trumpet, and Trombone):
1. Modes and Scales. Play as many one octave ii-V-I’s as you can in 2 minutes. Then play as many Blues Scales in as many octaves as you can in 2 additional minutes (you must play Concert Bb and F Minor Blues).
Modes are straight eighths, Blues scales are swing eighths.

4. Rhythm Etude on a Concert F with a metronome at 120bpm.

2. Jazz excerpt GREAT LOVE Measures 1-32 with the recorded accompaniment track. Play once through solo as written. Additional points earned if you can play through a second time using appropriate comping different from the one written out.

3. Students auditioning must play 2 choruses of improvised F Blues over the recorded track.

Drums:
1. Chart Excerpts – Perform the excerpts demonstrating appropriate groove/style. Make sure to “set up” ensemble figures as indicated. Reference recordings are provided for practice only. Students will perform without accompaniment in the audition.
2. Drum Styles – Swing, Shuffle, Rock, Funk, Bossa Nova. Play each one at a steady tempo for at least 16 bars.
